5 Geek Lyfe Approved Underground Movies For Halloween

With Halloween right around the corner everyone is in the mood for some good ol horror, mischief and mayhem. Here is a list of five films you probably have not seen that’ll sate your lust for all things weird.

1. The Horde

The Horde is a posse of crooked cops, malevolent gangsters and a horde of walking dead are the centre point of this gruesome, tight, action packed, claustrophobic tale of retribution and escape. Penned like animals, on the top floor of a deserted high-rise block, these two opposing gangs find that they are not alone in the lair of bloodthirsty corridors of death. Joining forces to survive, they must reach ground level together or perish. Loaded with a bad ass attitude, guns, axes and extremely creative hand-to-hand combat sequences that project the fears and paranoia that are the fighting forces behind the need to survive, when caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a fan of zombie flicks, this one is near the top of my list of all time favorites. The entire film is in french so you’ll need to read subtitles but honestly, I think it just adds to the awesome. During the film they literally use cocaine to enhance their body to fight the undead. How could you not watch this film?

2. Odd Thomas

In a California desert town, a short-order cook with clairvoyant abilities encounters a mysterious man with a link to dark, threatening forces.

Odd Thomas actually took me by surprise, when first suggested to me I thought it was going to be terrible. While watching the film I found the story engaging, monsters threatening enough to fear for the character when he found himself in danger and the laws of the universe entertaining. I don’t want to say too much more because the movie is wonderful due to the fact that I expected it to be bad and had no prior knowledge of the book nor the film.

The acting is great, humor on point, great action and all around a fun ride.

3. Devil’s Carnival

Lost souls enter The Devil’s Carnival where they are each faced with the sins they committed in life.

Other than Disney films, I tend to not enjoy most musicals. Then Devil’s Carnival entered my life and blew my mind. As the synopsis says above, three people die and are sent to hell which is a carnival owned by the Devil himself. During their stay they are confronted by others who have lost their way and are tempted. The music is this film is so fan-friggin-tastic that it’ll be stuck in your mind well after you watch it, forcing you to go and look up the songs on Youtube.

It’s eerie, gloomy, chaotic, insane, pompadours, and pretty much everything you’d think a carnival thrown by the devil would contain.

4. Tucker and Dale vs Evil

Tucker & Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is a unique twist on the slasher genre by having the good looking college kids be the villains. There are a lot of laughs to be had during this film, right alongside gory deaths via whacky ways. The acting in the film is actually pretty good(you know, for being a dark comedy), preppy college kids meet their demise, good guys are likable and they have the obligatory beautiful woman. Can’t go wrong with this!

5.John Dies At The End

A new street drug that sends its users across time and dimensions has one drawback: some people return as no longer human. Can two college dropouts save humankind from this silent, otherworldly invasion?

John Dies At The End was one of those movies you saw on your main page of Netflix but never bothered to watch due to never hearing about it. Granted, I’ve heard of the book and nothing but the great reviews of it which is the only factor that motivated me to watch it. Needless to say I was surprised by the film being so great. It has supernatural features that compare it to something out of a H.P. Lovecraft novel with creatures, other worlds, spark of insanity and quite a bit of comedy to lighten the mood. A great watch if you wanna go for a weird ride that you wouldn’t have taken otherwise.
