Five Geeky Bands that Might Have Flown Under Your Radar

Five Geeky Bands that Might Have Flown Under Your Radar

Music is a big passion of mine, and one of my favorite hobbies. Video games are also a big passion of mine, and are one of my most detrimental vices. I also enjoy classic fantasy novels, and nothing is as comfortable as curling up with a copy of Thieves’ World. So when I started putting this list together, I thought “What makes me a geek? How can my love for music, games, and literature translate into a list of bands that everyone can enjoy? Well it probably can’t, but it can translate into a list of bands that someone might enjoy. So, without further ado, here are Five Geeky Bands that Might Have Flown Under Your Radar.

The Advantage

Spencer Seim from Hella, another awesome band worth checking out, serves up super rad covers of retro video game music that are as faithful to the originals as they are unique. The old chiptunes are given new life with live instrumentation, and it really does sound phenomenal. If you enjoy playing classic games, it is very likely that The Advantage can play your favorite soundtrack. These guys will definitely have you jamming out to your most cherished OST like never before.

Holy Fuck

Hailing from the moose-ridden frozen maple wasteland of Canada, Holy Fuck prides themselves on crafting a modern electronica sound without using any proper techniques. You might have heard this band featured on Kenny vs. Spenny, providing a backdrop to the comedy show’s shenanigans. It really is amazing what Holy Fuck can do, and without seeing them live one would never know that the chill electronic beats they are listening to were created with nothing but drums, a bass guitar, and an array of out of place items such as a roll of film, toy keyboards, and electronic laser guns. If you’re into creative groups with MacGyvered sounds, these guys are right up your alley.

Hammerfall

What would a list of geeky bands be without a fantasy themed power metal group? There is definitely a cheese factor at play, however you just have to love the classic cliché sound Hammerfall produces. Their sound is decidedly high fantasy and their album art is the stuff that murals on the sides of vans are made of. This entertaining Swedish group draws their inspiration from traditional fantasy, and even Game of Thrones. They are definitely worth checking out, even if only ironically.

Minibosses

From Phoenix, Arizona, Minibosses is a Nintendocore band in the same vein as The Advantage; however, this group might be a little more accessible as all of their songs are available for free download on their website. Minibosses specializes in NES music, and they have an expansive discography featuring all of the greatest hits, from Mario to Ghosts ‘n Goblins. If you are a sucker for video game music covers like me, definitely give this band a listen.

Wizard

Oh man, are these guys something special. Fantasy power metal holds a special place in my heart, and Wizard is a shining example of the genre at its best. Nothing can provide a better soundtrack to your D&D session than the barbaric riffs and mystical shreds that Wizard can cast, and their videos basically equate to a low-budget LARP session. It is just fantastic. If you have ever read a fantasy novel, Wizard is essentially the musical adaptation of that. Seriously, listen to them right now.
