Action! Romance! Russia! A Red Sparrow Review

Spy movies come in all shapes and sizes and Red Sparrow is the latest spy flick to hit the big screen! Featuring the incredible Jennifer Lawrence as Dominka, she is faced with an unfortunate situation that leads to nothing but chaos and ruin.

Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to ‘Sparrow School,’ a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. Her first mission, targeting a C.I.A. agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.

A lot of times when it comes to the spy genre, we watch a male protagonist who often seduces or powers his way through conflicts. In Red Sparrow, we have a female lead who is smaller than most of her opponents. What she lacks in physical strength she makes up for in wit and tact. Dominka has been walked over and betrayed constantly in just the first 20 minutes, when her main goal is to get care for her ill mother.

In the film, we are introduced to her uncle Vanya, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, who is a high ranking officer in the Russian government. We are also introduced to C.I.A. operative Nate, played by Joel Edgerton, who is spying on the Russian government and working with a double agent from Russia. The entire film is about discovering who the mole is out of the handful of characters presented before us. Along the way plans are flipped on their heads, there is back stabbing and so much more!

The action in this film is top notch as tiny Jennifer Lawrence uses anything and everything to inflict pain on others in a violent rage. Not to mention there are torture scenes in the film that made me regret eating while watching! All in all, they did a great job of balancing action with politics and good ol’ spy tension.

In the review restrictions, I am not allowed to say anything about the spoilers because it is such an integral part of the film. I will say that there is a great reason for this restriction and any one who watches the film will have a blast guessing just what Dominika will do when faced with impossible situations. While it is not the best spy film of all time, it is still a solid film overall. Be sure to check out more about Red Sparrow here!
