Why Momokun Is Fantastic
Hello friends! I want to introduce you to a woman by the name of Momokun. She is a cosplayer who has gained quite the following because of her curves and charisma. It is one thing to be blessed with a body of certain proportions but to also have a personality that is filled of wit, goofiness, down to earth, and a vibe of just doing what makes her happy, it is hard not to be captivated!
Normally when I feature cosplayers I admire, I reach out to them with a series of questions that gives insight on both themselves and them as cosplayers. I have reached out to Momokun a few times and she actually accepted twice but both of our schedules had conflicted. However, recently she has been receiving quite a bit of hostility from members of the community.
Two of the main reasons that I can see from my outside perspective is her being voluptuous and curvy, which is not the beauty standard for many, and that she does geeky fetish modeling. These two progressive acts make her an easy target for those who already dislike her. There are various other aspects of this topic that I could write about and would love to discuss at great length with other members of the community but for right now, I want to focus on the fact that she is wonderful and why she is.
Down to Earth
Over the years I have met many cosplayers both in state, out of state, and internationally. The experiences with them vary depending on if it was in person, online or otherwise. When it comes to Momokun I can say that every experience has been nothing short of wonderful. I’ve been following her since one of her very first interviews in her Seven Deadly Sins cosplay years ago. In that time I have commented on multiple posts and was pleased to see her reply.
The coolest experience I have ever had was at wonder con earlier this year. I had went with a friend of mine by the name of name of Game2hype. On the way to Anaheim he explained to me that Momokun loved a nerdcore group called Starbomb and how one of her hidden talents was being able to rap the entire song at the drop of a dime. I disregarded it as cosplay legend just how Jessica Nigri has the ability to stealth a con so well that you won’t know she was there until you find out on social media, even if she was standing right next to you or how Kamui cosplay is actually a goddess of art and just pretends to be human.
So we go to Wondercon and sure enough we spot Momokun doing her thing out of cosplay and my friend stops her and then asks about Starbomb. She literally rapped the entire Ryu vs Ken rap battle right there. I could not believe she would just randomly be so dope to complete strangers about something she loves and then give us hugs, take a photo with us and walk on like nothing. It was the coolest thing ever.
Say what you will about Momokun but you can not deny that the woman hustles day and night for her craft. It doesn’t matter if it is creating a cosplay, going to convention, interacting with fans, working on modeling, satisfying her patreons, etc. It would overwhelm the normal person so fast and yet she continues to work hard and even if she gives her complete 100% she is still hated on. She takes those terrible comments and brushes past them to continue being her amazing self and supporting her friends in all that they do.
It is inspiring to me to see a fellow minority who fights against the norm in her own way and makes a name for herself. Scanning through her feed gives a glimpse of just how many conventions she attends and when she isn’t at a convention she is preparing for the next one or working on side projects. She has such a can do attitude that I admire and respect!
Momokun is of middle eastern descent I believe, if I am wrong please correct me! On top of being a minority, she is also curvy and is proud of it. She tends to favor characters who match her body type which are not normally covered by other cosplayers and she runs with it to the ends of the earth before flipping everything and jumping on the next costume. Beyond all of this she acknowledges that she doesn’t have the most common body type in the cosplay community. When criticized for this, she fires back by directly addressing the issue at hand. During Colossal Con, a convention focused on being at a water park, she took note of folks taking photos of her body and posting them to show off the cellulite.
She posted soon after with her own photo to show it off to everyone to take away the power from any who wanted to slander her. This took a ton of guts because although I personally believe cellulite is beautiful because it is just natural and a part of being a human being, I know something like this wrecks many girl’s self confidence. Not many others would have gone to such lengths and her post inspired others to post their “imperfect” bodies to show others that they are all in the same boat. I give her a ton of props for this!
She Is A Human Being
The fact that she is alive and a person qualifies her for being incredible. She might not be perfect, but then again who among us can say that we have never made a mistake? She gets up every morning and probably checks her cell phone to see what messages came through, like all of us she probably sees the bad comments above the compliments. Through out the day she works on her projects and organizes events for fans in hopes that maybe it will be enough to please everyone. After her hard work is finished and it gets published she either runs from her phone or checks it constantly to see what the reaction is like, was all the time and effort a waste? Did she do the right thing by turning down casual events with friends in exchange for professional events the right move?
When the bad days roll in and the world feels overwhelming it is hard not to imagine that her issues must be ten times worse because she has thousands of people who dislike her and let her know it. Over here at Geek Lyfe we get maybe 1 bad comment a month and I dwell on it so bad, I can not imagine having so many just actively hate her for just living her life and doing her thing. It takes a lot of guts for her to continue to be amazing and when she breaks down she lets folks know but a majority of the time posts when she is happy, uplifting, and for the entertainment of her fans.
I felt compelled to write this article because often times we don’t appreciate those around us who give their all until it is too late. The real talk here is that I have known people in the community who have attempted suicide or have actually went through with it. It is so easy to forget that the person we are bad mouthing are real and could do something they can never take back. If you have an issue with someone or just can not stand someone then just turn away from them. You gain nothing from slandering them other than wasting your time when you could be creating something for yourself! As the Buddha said: “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”
We here at Geek Lyfe always look forward to celebrating others and their accomplishments and we want to recognize Momokun for how fantastic she truly is. It doesn’t ever matter how many fans she has, what cosplay she is wearing, what her weight is, what projects she takes part in, she’ll always be incredible in every way! I hope you can check her out and appreciate her work as well!
To Momokun: You are fucking awesome, homie. Please don’t let anyone get you down or slow your roll. All of these bad vibes will wash away in time and you have so many people who love and support you! We can not wait to see you at future conventions! 🙂
