Bored of card games? Why not try some tile-based games? From dominoes to Scrabble, there are many iconic games that use tiles. Below are six prime examples.

Dominoes

Dominoes are thought to have originated in China in the 11th century. European-style dominoes would be introduced in the 18th century and may have developed independently or been influenced by Chinese dominoes. As with playing cards, there are actually many different games that you can play with dominoes. The most basic domino game (and the one that most people are familiar with) is ‘the block game’ in which players must compete to lay down dominoes, making sure that the end of each domino matches. Mahjong

Mahjong is a tile-based game that originated in China in the 19th century. It uses a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols. While there are several variations of mahjong, the most popular is Hong Kong mahjong. It is played with four players and the main objective is to make matching sets and pairs. The winner is the player who first forms four sets and one pair. You can play free mahjong games online if you do not have a mahjong set at home.

Rummikub

Rummikub is a tile-based game that was developed in the mid-20th century in Israel. By the late 1970s, it had become a popular tile-based game to rival dominoes. Rummikub combines elements of rummy and mahjong. The game consists of 104 number tiles made up of four suits with two jokers. There are guides online that can teach you how to play Rummikub

Scrabble

Scrabble is the most well-known tile-based word game. It was first developed in the US in the 1930s and is now played all around the world. Players compete to create words out of tiles. Different letter tiles are worth different amounts of points. Where you place words on the board affects how much each word scores. This game is a must for anyone that likes language or board games. An app version of scrabble is available to play that allows you to play other players or a computer.

Qwirkle

Qwirkle was developed in 2006. It consists of 108 tiles each containing different colors and shapes. You score points by creating lines of tiles that are either one color or one shape. Some players have described it as a mix of rummikub and scrabble. The rules are fairly simple to pick up making it suitable for players of all ages. There are web-based and app-based versions of this game that you can play.

Azul

Azul is a recently developed tile-based game inspired by the Portuguese tiles called azulejos. Players collect sets of tiles and create rows to score points. Azul is one of the most visually beautiful tile-based games and is fairly simple to play once you familiarize yourself with the tiles. In the few years that it has been out it has already proved to be a hit and has spawned several sequels.
