Behind the Scenes: Jet City Comic Show!

Hello Everyone!

Last weekend I had the pleasure of being an exhibitor at a local comic book convention called Jet City Comic Show! There’s something magical about small local cons and I had the pleasure of getting a behind the scenes look at Jet City. I work for a fabrication lab called FabLab and we were able to obtain an exhibitor’s space to promote our shop.

Our shop arrived at our booth about an hour before the actual show began. We picked up our exhibitor badges and set to work assembling our booth to become lovely and presentable. It was interesting to see how the larger booths assembled their displays and how meticulously their comics were organized. I now have even more respect for all the exhibitors and artists in artist alley. After we were done setting up the anxious wait for the show to start began. ( I also noted during this waiting period that our booth had optimal viewing of the costume contests stage!! Hooray!)

Here’s a look at our FabLab booth and our hilarious typos on our badges:

I usually never arrive right on time for cons, but there were folks already lined up when I had arrived to set up. As soon as the chime sounded that the show floor had opened people flooded in. Harley Quinns and Star Lords galore! I was amazed by how many people there were. The energy was amazing! Everyone was so pumped to get in on the show floor and see the panels! 😀

For the next 7 hours we explained how the 3D printer we had brought along worked and what services the shop offered. We printed off cool little space invader charms the whole day! It was so fun to see how excited people were to see our printer in action! 😀photo (14)

The time flew by unlike many other exhibitions I had worked at. I think the reason why was that EVERYONE THERE WAS AWESOME. There were so many interesting and kind people there! There were kind geek bikers with glorious beards and wonderful cosplayers who understood the references I made. There were award winning lego constructers, artists, authors and comic enthusiasts alike and they were all so cool!!

This year there were even celebrity guests Dirk Benedict, Richard Hatch, Michael Berryman and the author of The Last Unicorn Peter S. Beagle!  I was able to talk to Peter S Beagle during his signing and he told me about how he was able to visit his friends here in Washington and have breakfast with them. Random, I know but where else could I talk to a famous author for 10 minutes straight without being rushed through? SMALL CONS ARE MAGIC.

*Jet City Comic Con also held special viewings of The Last Unicorn with a Peter S. Beagle Q&A! How cool is that?!*

If you ever have any local cons going on I highly recommend that you attend it. Cons like Jet City have so much to offer and have a completely different feel and pace than larger cons. You can really take your time exploring and talking to the people around you. You also get to meet the people who help perpetuate the con world on a more personal level. To me it’s absolutely wonderful!

So what do you think? Big cons or small cons? What is your favorite con of all time? Tell me in the comments! 🙂

Now for Giveaway info! I have up for grabs a pair of Breaking Bad Heisenberg earrings, a Starship Enterprise necklace and a cool comic book notebook with an “Approved by the Comics Code Authority” stamp charm.
