Elektra to Appear in Season 2 of Daredevil

Elektra to Appear in Season 2 of Daredevil

The world recently learned that Daredevil returns to Netflix this March with its second season, a welcome announcement from those that love the show. We also recently learned of some of the characters who will make an appearance, including the Punisher and Elektra. For many, it’s the latter who draws the most attention. Comic book fans know Elektra as the love interest of Matt Murdock, but her unpredictability makes her both unreliable and incredibly desirable to the show’s hero.

Showrunner Doug Petrie explained her presence perfectly: “Matt’s a deeply moral complicated guy and she’s just the best bad girlfriend you can possibly have… She does everything wrong and attractive, she’s his id, the wild side. Matt is always taming his wild side. Elektra just lets it out. He’s both repulsed and deeply drawn to that.”

The first season of Daredevil has been incredibly well received, especially after the Ben Affleck-led movie from 2003 left fans more than a little flat. That movie included Elektra as well, played by Jennifer Garner. The character earned a spinoff movie, the self-titled Elektra in 2005, but it received just an aggregated 10 percent rating from critics and was immediately panned.

Daredevil’s first season succeeded in setting up the world Matt Murdock lives in and the relationships he forms, namely with his two best friends, Foggy and Karen, along with a semi-romantic relationship with Claire. It also dove into Murdock’s faith and his relationship with Father Lathom. In short, it created a world in Hell’s Kitchen and now it appears in season 2 a big part of the story will be threatening that same world.

Elektra makes up a big part of that and she is critical to Daredevil’s on-screen development. While not quite Superman and Lois Lane, Daredevil and Elektra have become tied together. Driving that point home is the fact the two appear everywhere together, particularly in gaming circles. The two characters titles are right next to each other on the screen, making for an interesting choice that they each have separate games instead of being combined into one. That dynamic is part of what makes her appearance in season 2 so exciting. Charlie Cox, the actor who plays Matt Murdock, said the two will have a fiery relationship in the upcoming season.

“If you imagine that relationship, a very fiery, very lustful, very loving and hating relationship, and then you add to that two people who know serious martial arts, you’re going to have an interesting dynamic,” Cox revealed.

The Elektra dynamic was one of the big pieces that the Ben Affleck movie mishandled. It may have come down to the simple fact that a two-hour movie didn’t have enough time to create Murdock’s world, introduce relationships, and lead to a fight with a villain all at once. Elektra’s appearance in the movie felt forced and awkward. The Netflix version has more time to explore the relationship instead of jamming the character into an already-undeveloped plot line, so the potential there is for something great.
