Extra-Curriculum Activities For Geeks

Geeks are a diverse bunch who have always valued their hobbies. It might be pretty obvious to our readers that this particular collective is bound by a love of all things cosplay, but I would bet my

figurine collection that many here also have a love for gaming, comics and conventions.

Yet there’s no end to the line of hobbies and pastimes that can keep a keen mind busy. If cosplay is our bread, and anime our butter, then what does the humble geek take for dessert? Here are some of our favorite extra-curriculum activities. If we’re not on D&D, we are probably doing one of these.

Or fiction really… just reading. You might find us near the physics section, or we might be indulging in a graphic novel or two. If you thought books were old news, you have never visited the home of a true geek. Always yearning for knowledge and entertainment, nothing beats a good read. Just pick a subject and jump right in!

It’s got to be one of my favorite things to do. Get in a car with a few friends, stock up with a boot full of snacks, and drive off to some far-away land. It could be a comic convention, a LARP, but most of the time it’s nice to head off to a cultural or natural attraction. A museum is always a good choice, but it has to be an impressive and truly educational one.

There’s nothing that gets our minds racing like playing a proper solid tactical game played against a worthy opponent. Some like pen and paper role playing games, others opt for MMORPGs, and some prefer the more classic board and card games. Poker is always a popular geek game. I mean, you don’t think the professionals got to be playing at the Poker Stars Sochi Championship by wearing shades and looking cool do you? They had to study maths and psychology, and play games for days on end. Sound familiar?

Knitting is awesome! It ties into so many other geek hobbies, such as costume making and creating your favorite cartoon characters. It is also really relaxing, kind of like a meditation. This is one way to get some along time and let your mind meander through peaceful places. A perfect activity for the introverted geek, or anyone who has a lot of time on their hands and likes to get creative.

Not all geek activities are lazy. Getting out in nature is the perfect balance for the rest of the activities. Take a long hike in your nearest beautiful place to feel refreshed, and take a break from watching too many sitcoms. Exercise and nature are the perfect combination and, who knows, you might even see a wild pikachu!

Of course we know that every geek is different. We are advocates of individuality and fans of self expression. We are certainly not here to put you in a box! What are your favorite hobbies to keep you busy in between cosplays and conventions?
